Neighbors fed up with crime in Kansas City's Northeast area

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Neighbors in the city's northeast side say they have had enough crime in their area and want something done about it.

The neighborhood is near East Independence and Bales avenues. Neighbors say they have seen it all, from drugs deals and prostitution, and it even happens in front of children.

Several business near the intersection say going to work is an occupational hazard, according to one clerk.

"They're drinking and urinating, and people are scared to cross paths with them," said the clerk who asked to unidentified for fear of reprisal from the drugs dealer and prostitutes who frequent the area and harass customers.

He said his customers are afraid to visit his business.

Neighbors say police come when they're called, but once the authorities leave, the vagrants, drug dealers and prostitutes return, and it is business as usual.

A six-month review of police activity in that area shows at least 300 response for assault, drug activity and sexual offenses.

"We're tired of businesses wanting to pick up and move out of the neighborhood simply because we can't get any help," said Leslie Caplan, president of the Scarritt Renaissance Neighborhood Association.

Caplan has asked for a meeting with Police Chief Darryl Forte.

"Children shouldn't have to deal with this as they go to school and come back home," Caplan said.

A date for Kaplan meeting with police has not been set.

Neighbors and business owners are planning their own meeting before they take their concerns to authorities.
