CHANDLER, AZ (CBS5) -

A Chandler family was lucky to escape an early-morning garage fire that destroyed the garage and two cars Wednesday.

A grandmother, mother and daughter live in the house near Frye and Alma School roads when one of them smelled smoke and alerted the others about 2 a.m., said a Chandler Fire Department spokesperson.

A car in the garage and one in the driveway were destroyed by the flames, the spokesperson said.

The garage was engulfed in flames when crews arrived, but they were able to contain most of the damage to the garage, the spokesperson said.

Crews had to cut holes in the roof that will need to be repaired before the family can return to living in the house, the spokesperson said.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was under investigation, though it didn't appear to be suspicious, the spokesperson said.
