A man accused of murdering an Apache Junction woman and attempting to kill another person is being held on $1 million bond.

Brian Kirby was arraigned Wednesday after being indicted for premeditated first-degree murder, the Pinal County attorney said.

The two incidents occurred last year. Kirby is charged with the July 7 murder of 42-year-old Lora Athey and the July 5 attempted murder of one other person.

Athey was found in her home after police went there for a welfare check.

For the July 5 incident, Kirby faces an additional four charges, including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, kidnapping, misconduct involving a weapon and aggravated assault causing temporary but substantial disfigurement.

A pretrial conference hearing for both of these matters has been scheduled on Oct. 22 at 9 a.m.
