TROY, AL (WSFA) -

It's football season and you know what that means.. tailgating! For Troy University students tailgating is about to take on a difference experience.

For years students and fans alike gathered near Sartain Hall on University Avenue to party and cook-out but that changes this weekend when the Trojans take on UAB at home.

University leaders have moved the student tailgating section to an open field under the shadow of Trojan Arena. The field also serves as the school's intramural field as well and the football team's new practice complex.

Troy University senior Trip Hubbard has embraced the concept.

"This will give us more space to enjoy the pre-game festivities so I like it," said Hubbard.

School employees worked today setting up tents for tomorrow. Derrick Brewster says the idea is to bring all students together, one big family.

"This is all about enhancing their game day experience by bringing them together instead of having them scattered about near Sartain Hall," said Brewster, Assistant Dean for Student Services.

There is a downside. With the exception of a few tents already erected, there is no shade.

No shade and no trees, John Hartwell says no problem. There is a plan to fix that.

"We have plans to build a pavilion with restrooms," said Hartwell, Troy University's Athletic Director.

To be clear the change in location for students does not impact the tailgating area near the entrance of the stadium or the parking lot sectioned off for RV'ers. Hartwell also adds the Trojan March route on University Avenue will remain.

Tomorrow night the Trojans hope their game plan will be enough to win the first game of the season against UAB.

University leaders hope their game day 'enhancement' plan is a winner, too.
