LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Complaints over a house where Jewish social gatherings take place prompted a Saturday morning forum with city leaders.

A shaded tree provided an arena for questions and answers as well as heated exchanges between neighbors and metro government personnel. Residents are upset about a house in their neighborhood becoming a meeting place where some of the Jewish faith socialize.

The property they're opposing is not a synagogue. They're contesting a small building behind a house referred to as a Chabad House: an informal place to fellowship, meet friends and pray.

"Now that it's built, I doubt anyone will tear it down. So is it here to stay forever, now?" Judy Glidewell said as she questioned metro personnel.

Neighbors said they're not intolerant, but some voiced concerns over vehicles blocking driveways, leaving tire tracks on lawns and preventing traffic along Almara Circle.

Codes and Regulations cited the property August 13 for violating regulations. "What is of issue is - is this an organized church," Jim Mims, director of Metro Codes & Regulations, said.

Neighbors requested action from Metro Councilman Brent Ackerson. "We need to listen, get the facts and let the process play out without violating anyone's liberties or rights," Ackerson said.

LMPD was also represented at the meeting. "We've been here along Almara Circle at least twice in the past month about parking issues. Once our officers were on scene, those who parked their vehicles illegally over at the Chabad House quickly moved them," Fifth Division Major Mark Fox said.

Saturday is a holy day for the Jewish faith. Chabad House organizers declined on-camera interviews or comment during their day of prayer. Organizers behind the Chabad House have until mid September to come into compliance.
