LSU's young defense rises to the occasion

ARLINGTON, TX (WAFB) -

The final score Saturday night read 37-27 in favor of LSU.

At first glance the 27 points given up by the Tigers might look like the team will need to win in an offensive shootout each week, but that was not the case Saturday night when LSU played TCU.

While you cannot take 14 points off of TCU's final score stat sheet, the points definitely should not reflect the effort the defense showed.

After LSU took a 13-3 lead over the Horned Frogs, B.J. Catalon ran back the ensuing kickoff 100 yards cutting the Tigers lead to 13-10.

A 4th quarter mix up between Zach Mettenberger and Alfred Blue led to a fumble inside the Tigers' five yard line. TCU's Waymon James quickly scored a touchdown to make it 30-24 LSU.

The young Tigers held TCU to 259 yards total offense. The Horned Frogs gained 114 yards on the ground and threw for only 145 yards.

The defense held TCU to an incredible 13 first downs, one coming off of a costly 3rd down penalty on Ego Ferguson for roughing the passer. The first down led to a Horned Frog touchdown.

Jalen Mills, Jermauria Rasco and Craig Loston led the Tiger defense with five tackles each. Mills added an interception and Rasco split a sack with Danielle Hunter.

While Jordan Allen had only one tackle, the defensive end pressured TCU's quarterbacks several times during the game.

Defensive tackles Anthony Johnson and Ferguson (minus the roughing the passer penalty) played brilliantly throughout the game and showed why they are leaders on a young defensive line.

Defensive coordinator John Chavis had a young defense that was decimated by the NFL Draft ready to play Saturday night and while there were mistakes, the team will continue to get better and watch out, they might just be a special unit by year's end.
