KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

Labor Day weekend is often considered the "unofficial" end of summer, with, among other things, the closing of pools and water parks.

That includes Schlitterbahn Water Park in Kansas City, KS, which closed as usual at the end of the day Monday but not without giving a special family one last ride.

Chosen by Operation Homefront, which provides financial and other assistance to the families of service members and wounded warriors, Army veteran Dustin Kuberski, his wife and two young daughters were chosen to close the park with a ride on the Storm Blaster, Schlitterbahn's most popular ride.

"It's tough having a family and leaving them behind," Kuberski said.

He should know just how tough that is, because he survived four tours of duty in Iraq, including during the 2003 invasion.

"I didn't get to see my oldest daughter being born. I didn't meet her until she was 7 months old at the airport in St. Louis," Kuberski laments.

He may have missed out on a lot of family memories, but thanks to Schlitterbahn and Operation Homefront, Kuberski has made some new ones.

His wife said coming out to the water park as special guests has been a huge stress reliever.

"We really needed the time together as a family," Jessi Kuberski said. "We wouldn't normally get that."

So, the Kuberski's were the last people to ride the Storm Blaster this year.  They say they loved it and appreciate the chance to make up for lost time as a family.

For its part, Schlitterbahn said this is the first year it teamed up with Operation Home Front, but it won't be the last.
