KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

An act of violence in Kansas City, KS, has ripped apart a family.

Police said Friday night that a man wanted for questioning has been taken into custody in connection with his girlfriend's death. The man was found in the Detroit area as he apparently was attempting to enter Canada.

On Thursday, police said a man shot and killed his girlfriend in front of their 2-year-old son inside her house near North 15th Street and Garfield Avenue.

"She was just 20 years old with a 2-year-old son that she loved to death. I don't know how I'm going to explain to him that he will never see his momma again," said the victim's cousin, Shawana Carvin.

Shawana Carvin said her cousin Tyshia Carvin was a loving mother and didn't deserve what happened to her. Relatives said her boyfriend showed up and started arguing with her in front of their son. Tyshia Carvin's grandmother and aunt stepped in to try to help her, but they couldn't stop him from allegedly pulling the trigger about 2:30 a.m.

"They tried to protect her. He tried to pull her out of the house and they tried to hold her back. And he shoved them out the way and gunned her down. That's why if you are in an abusive relationship, get out of it," said Grayce Carvin, another cousin.

Police said Tyshia Carvin was shot multiple times and died at the scene.

"They were typical boyfriend and girlfriend with relationship problems. That's it. I don't know what caused him to do that. I want to know why. What did you do it for?" Shawana Carvin said.

Shawana Carvin had this message for the boyfriend before a person of interest was taken into custody.

"Turn yourself in. What's the point - you staying in the street? You took a life for no reason, not thinking about your son. Just turn yourself in," she said.

Police have not yet released the name of Tyshia Carvin's boyfriend.

If you have any information that can help police with this case, call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
