CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

The family of Gina DeJesus, one of Ariel Castro's victims, tells 19 Action News Reporter Lydia Esparra they are shocked and saddened to learn of his suicide.

Convicted kidnapper and rapist Ariel Castro used a bed sheet to hang himself in his cell on Tuesday night at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, OH in Pickaway County.

Castro was sentenced to life in prison, plus 1,000 years, for kidnapping and sexually assaulting Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus while holding them captive in his Seymour Avenue house for over a decade.

Felix DeJesus, Gina's father, tells Esparra that they were expecting Castro to spend the rest of his life behind bars. He said death is not what his family wanted, and adds that they had already forgiven Castro for his heinous crimes.

The DeJesus family is offering condolences to Castro's entire family, especially his mother.

"We don't know what to say," Felix added.

A cousin of Castro tells Reporter Jen Picciano that she is skeptical of the suicide.

"One of my initial thoughts was - did he really do this to himself? Or could possibly someone else have gotten to him?"

"I still really find it hard to believe...he somehow mustered up the strength or the so-called courage to take his own life," the cousin added.
