BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A Ponchatoula, La. woman is charged with child desertion after being accused of putting her child in an ice chest, along with a gas can, and closing the lid.

According to police records, 38-year-old Jami Ranson is the mother of the infant.

Baton Rouge Police say it happened just after Midnight on August 2, 2013 in the 12000 block of Tams Drive in Baton Rouge. A woman heard Ranson outside of her house with an infant.

Don Copolla with Baton Rouge Police said the witness saw Ranson put the baby in the ice chest with the gas can; that is when the witness says she took the baby out of the ice chest and called police. When police arrived, Copolla says Child Services was called and they took the child.

Ranson was charged with one count of child desertion and possession of schedule 4 controlled dangerous substances. The possession charge comes after police say Ranson had prescription anxiety medication.

"It's hard to say if she had a prescription or not -- or who know what else she may have been going through to think to put her child in the ice chest and close the lid," said Copolla.

The child was taken to a local hospital to be checked out and was later released unharmed.

Ranson was arrested and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. If convicted on the aforementioned charges, she faces a combined sentence of 66 months in prison.
