CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Eleven children have died from drowning in Ohio this summer making it among the worst state for such tragedies, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The agency has been tracking how many kids were killed in pools and spas between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Throughout the country, 202 children between the ages of 1 and 14 drowned this summer. Among the victims, 143 were under the age of 5.

In addition to the 11 kids who drowned in Ohio, 23 died in California, 24 in Florida, and 28 in Texas.

CPSC released the numbers as part of a campaign to urge parents to construct fences around all pools, teach children how to swim, and to stay alert for dangers while kids are in the pool.
