Middletown police investigate critical motorcycle accident following Merle Haggard show

MIDDLETOWN, OH (FOX19) -

Middletown Police say that 33-year-old Michael Smith is in critical condition this morning following a late night motorcycle crash.

Police and fire units were called to the accident scene on North Breiel Blvd. near Riverview Avenue around 12:15A-M Friday morning.  Smith was found on the curb with head injuries. His motorcycle was in flames.

Police say Smith was driving his 1985 Honda motorcycle south on Breiel Blvd when it went off the right side of the road.  He struck a utility police and was thrown from the bike.  His bike then caught fire.

He was treated at the scene by medics and then flown to Miami Valley Hospital by Care Flight.

Police believe alcohol may have been a factor.  Smith was wearing a Merle Haggard t-shirt and wristband that may have come from a Haggard show at JD Legends in Franklin.  Smith was not wearing a helmet.
