CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -
Convicted kidnapper and rapist, Ariel Castro committed suicide in prison Tuesday night. Interrogation tapes after his arrest show how he came clean about his horrific crimes.
53-year-old Castro was sentenced to life, plus 1,000 years for holding Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight hostage for a decade.
Castro pleaded guilty to 937 counts, including rape, kidnap and aggravated murder.
The tapes show Castro coming clean about what happened. At one point he's wiping tears from his eyes.
Castro even revealed that he called the mother of one of his victims.
Castro said, "I think I said something...that I have her daughter and that she's okay and that she's my wife now, something like that, you know, probably not the exact words."
Investigators asked what did mom say?
He said he hung up before she could say anything.
19 Action News has always reported that Amanda's mom, Louwanna Miller said someone called her a week after Amanda went missing with her daughter's cell phone. Investigators came up empty.
Castro said he should have been caught when he kidnapped 14-year-old Gina DeJesus.
He said there were surveillance cameras at her middle school that should have captured him just 15 minutes before he kidnapped her.
DeJesus was kidnapped as she walked from Wilbur Wright Middle School in Cleveland.
Castro said he thought he was going to get caught when his girlfriend visited his house and noticed a TV on in the room where Michelle Knight was secretly being held.
"She seen that I had a TV on in the upstairs room and she says, 'What is that? You have a TV on up there?' And my heart started beating. I was like okay, she's probably catching onto something," explained Castro.
Castro was found hanging in his cell inside the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio Tuesday night.
Castro was in protective custody and was being checked on every 30 minutes. A review is underway in his death.
