TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
As law enforcement provides updates on investigation into the disappearance of baby Elaina Steinfurth, neighbors in east Toledo are reacting to their announcement on possibly finding her remains.
It's a very somber scene Friday. Many, including Elaina's father, are waiting for confirmation to know for sure if body discovered belongs to the toddler, who has been missing for more than three months.
The signs of hope are still up in east Toledo. While many believe it is Elaina's body, which is now being examined by the coroner's office, Elaina's father says hope is all he has right now.
"I'm still holding onto hope it's not her, but if anything, you have to be realistic to some degree too...Just being hopeful," said Terry Steinfurth Jr.
While a positive identity has not been confirmed, neighbors on Federal Street say if Elaina has been found, the healing process can begin, most importantly for the family, but also for the entire neighborhood.
"It'll help TJ and the family heal, and hopefully it'll bring closure and help our street heal, and find peace with this," said Mona Pressnell. "For somebody to hurt a baby like that, it kills me. I can't even imagine."
"Nobody that has lived through this is going to be the same," said Kathleen Maier. "All the anger that's been generated, the heartbreak that was generated."
Toledo police officers have been keeping a presence to maintain peace in a neighborhood which has been shaken during this summer ordeal.
Elaina's father has confidence the department will uncover the truth.
"The police are doing what they can do. Hopefully justice will be served in the long run," said Steinfurth.
More community gatherings will take place in the neighborhood, including another prayer vigil Friday night.
