New TSA pre-check could speed up security process at KCI

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Travelers at KCI may soon be able to speed up the whole process of getting through security because the airport is one of dozens on a list for a new Transportation Security Administration program.

If you hate taking off your shoes, or belt or turning on your computer in the security lines at KCI, TSA pre-check could make your next trip a little smoother.

"If you're willing to let them poke around a little bit in your past, it's well worth it," said Tom Coonrod, a frequent flier.

Coonrod breezes through security at many of the airports he's in, and soon he'll breeze through KCI as well.

"It's still only in the city that it's in, so you have to be prepared for both contingencies," he said.

Coonrod uses the pre-check lanes in St. Louis and Chicago and says it usually takes much less time to get through security. He said the wait at KCI is rarely longer than 10 minutes or so, but sometimes every second counts.

"I think this is long overdue," he said. "It's great. You typically have maybe three people in line and don't have to take your jacket off, don't have to take the computer out of the bag, or shoes off."

TSA's pre-check program allows frequent fliers to go through special lanes at security checkpoints. Those who qualify have to be a U.S. citizen enrolled in an airline's frequent flier program to participate. The TSA checks their background to verify they're not a threat, and they can keep their shoes, and belt and jacket on.

Although the TSA won't exclude anyone from random security checks, pre-check is in 40 airports across the U.S. and it's expanding to 60 more.

For someone like Joseph Browne, who only flies a few times a year, the pre-check program might not make sense.

"It might be a little more of a hassle I think. But if that's what it takes, to be safe on an airplane, not a bad deal I guess," Browne said.

The TSA won't say exactly when pre-check will be open at KCI, only sometime before the end of the year.
