Interstate 35 shut down near Gardner after motorist shot

GARDNER, KS (KCTV) -

Both north and southbound Interstate 35 were shut down south of Gardner after a motorist traveling south on the highway was shot Friday night.

The Miami County Sheriff's Office said a 2007 Dodge Caravan minivan was southbound on I-35 at Edgerton Road when a random shot was fired from an unknown location. The shot hit the driver.

The motorist was rushed to the hospital and that person's condition was unknown as of midnight Friday, according to the Miami County Sheriff's Office. The passenger and three children in the minivan were not hurt.

Authorities worked to establish a perimeter near Edgerton.

Northbound traffic was later allowed to travel, but southbound remained closed for some time afterwards.

This began unfolding just after 8 p.m. Friday.

Kansas Highway Patrol said troopers were assisting local authorities. Johnson County and Franklin County sheriff's deputies also assisted.

The case is being investigated by the Miami County Sheriff's Office and Johnson County Sheriff's Office.

Officials ask that anyone who was in the area and heard gunshots, saw any pedestrians or saw vehicles driving in a manner that seemed out of place between 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. call the Miami County Sheriff at 913-294-TIPS (8477) or 913-294-3232. People with information can also call the Johnson County Sheriff at 913-782-0720.
