PLATTE COUNTY, MO (KCTV) -
Two people have died after a dump truck crashed on Interstate 29, near Dearborn, MO, Saturday.
The wreck happened about 12:30 p.m. near mile marker 29. At that time traffic in both directions was at a standstill, but all lanes of the interstate reopened about 4 p.m.
The Missouri Highway Patrol said Robert S. Richardson, 51, was heading north on I-29 when he lost control and veered off the left side of the road, smashing through the guardrail and then dropping down a steep embankment between the two bridges of the highway.
The dump truck vaulted about 60 feet down into Bee Creek below.
Both Richardson and his passenger, Crystal L. Harris, 35, died at the scene. Both lived in Kansas City, KS.
Troopers are trying to figure out why the driver lost control, looking at the speeds involved and having their commercial vehicle inspectors look over the dump truck for any possible malfunctions.
