BELTON, MO (KCTV) -

A bullet was found inside a Belton middle school earlier this week, and district officials said extra staff was placed throughout the school to monitor it.

The bullet was found on the floor of a classroom at Yeokum Middle School. The student who found the bullet handed it over to building administrators and a school resource officer.

The bullet was found Monday, but district officials did not issue a news release until Wednesday. The delay was not explained in the news release.

District administrators, staff members and school resource officers monitored hallways and common areas throughout the remainder of the school day.

The district said an investigation was conducted, but did not say the results of the investigation. The district also notified the Belton Police Department.

"The school district would like to commend staff and students for taking the situation seriously and handling it as they were instructed," the district said in its news release.

Name of school has been corrected.
