MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

WSFA 12 News is excited to announce the hire of a new weekend sports anchor/reporter. Stephen Gunter joined the WSFA family and made his first on-air appearance Thursday evening with a live report from Montgomery's Cramton Bowl.

Gunter comes to WSFA 12 News from sister station WLBT in Jackson, Mississippi where he had worked since 2010. Prior to WLBT, Gunter worked as a weekend sports anchor in Panama City, Florida.

Gunter is an Alabama native. He grew up just outside Andalusia in Covington County. He attended Troy University and graduated with a degree in Broadcast Journalism with a concentration in Sports Information in 2007.

Taking over where anchor/reporter Derek Steyer left off after 14 years, Gunter says he's excited to be home. Steyer took a position with a TV station in Ohio so he could be closer to family.

While it wasn't possible to make Stephen's name rhyme with "Wiregrass", which was a popular addition for Steyer's "Steyergrass" segments, Stephen will have his own segment and it will be called "The Gunter Annex".

The name is an homage of sorts to Montgomery's Gunter Annex military facility where the call letters W-S-F-A first got their start in the 1930s when it signed on as the state's fourth radio station.
