MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

New details on the ongoing investigation in the Montgomery Public Schools grade changing allegations.

Early this morning MPS Superintendent Barbara Thompson released a statement regarding the investigation saying,

"I join State Superintendent of Education Tommy Bice in refraining from any further comment concerning the allegations of improper grade changes pending the final outcome of the state's inquiry into the matter."

In August Doctor Bice issued a scathing letter to MPS regarding the grade changing allegations. In the letter Bice said, "Hundreds of grades had been changed and students graduated without merit, the result of a lack of institutional control in the Montgomery Public School System."

In response to Doctor Bice's letter MPS said it had instituted a hotline for reporting issues anonymously. MPS also said it had unveiled a new discipline and documentation process and would aggressively pursue action in improper grade changing.

Superintendent Thompson previously sat down with WSFA 12 News reporter Jennifer Oravett to talk about the investigation. Thompson said the grade changing incident was isolated to only 3 out of 55 schools in the district. She said Assistant Superintendent Louis Washington was terminated, before the investigation was completed, for other reasons. Also former Sidney Lanier Principal Micheal Gibbs' removal was effective this school year.

Also in her letter to the state Thompson recommended that the state revoke the teaching certificates of anyone who was found to have changed grades. Instead the state did not revoke any teaching certificates and told the Superintendent to handle discipline administratively.
