KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

It was a scary situation Friday for a Kansas City, KS, woman watching six kids when bullets ripped through the wall.

The incident occurred about 4 p.m. at 51st and Argentine streets.

Hours after the shots rang out, families living nearby were still on edge.

"I pushed him into my daughter's bedroom and I was still behind him and then the second shot came through," Dawn Kindred said.

She is counting her blessings after her house came under fire.

"We were walking up the stairs and we heard a noise that sounded to me like a small explosion, almost like a light bulb was exploding," Kindred said.

At least three large holes in various areas of Kindred's home were caused by bullets from a gun she said was fired by her neighbor of 16 years, someone she considered a friend. After tucking her children away, she to another home for help and that neighbor also heard the shots.

"I heard bam, bam, bam. My husband was like, ‘Those are shots, call the police,'" Amy Smith said.

Smith runs a home-based daycare and, at the time of the shooting, six children were inside. After calling police, Smith began calling their parents.

"I wanted my parents to know. I didn't want them to see or hear anything without hearing it from me first," she said.

Chopper 5 flew over the scene as police arrested the alleged shooter. Kindred said it wasn't the first time this has happened.

"About three or four weeks ago he fired an automatic weapon to the east and west in his driveway and shot off about 15 rounds," she said.

KCK police won't say what led to Friday's shooting, nor would they discuss the incident three weeks ago.

No one was hurt in either incident.

Neighbors said the man in custody, who is in his late 50s, started behaving differently after his wife passed away a few years ago.
