Big changes being considered at MLK Magnet

Big changes are being considered at one of Nashville's best-known schools, and many parents aren't happy about it.

Metro Schools Director Jesse Register has proposed eliminating seventh and eighth grades from MLK Magnet High School to prevent overcrowding. The district says restricting MLK to ninth through 12th grades will help.

Many parents are calling for alternatives or a compromise.

"I would really love to see, possibly the fifth and sixth graders that are going here at Head right now to be grandfathered in, as a possibility for them to still go to MLK in the seventh grade," said parent Nicole Helm.

Parents are circulating a petition against the change to present to school board members and are planning another meeting about the issue at the school at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
