MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The City of Montgomery has a new budget for the 2014 fiscal year after the city council voted 5 to 3 to approve the measure Tuesday evening.

The $229 million budget includes merit raises for city employees.

The city council also approved a $20 million, previously agreed upon loan to the Montgomery County Public School System. The money is for various construction expenses at the system's new Park Crossing High School. That vote was also 5 to 3.

City councilors also passed a 1.5 percent lodging tax increase at the meeting. That increase will bring the total lodging tax in the city to 14 percent. City officials say the increase will make Montgomery more competitive with other cities in the state.
