BOAZ, AL (WAFF) -

Two Boaz police officers were injured after a confrontation with a motorcyclist late Tuesday night.

The motorcyclist, Charles Burge, 33, is in the Boaz City Jail awaiting bond to be set on charges of felony assault, attempting to elude, reckless driving and possession of methamphetamine.

The incident began when police were conducting a license check around midnight Tuesday at the corner of Short Street and Alabama 205.

Officers said they noticed a motorcycle pull off of the road and into a parking lot ahead of the checkpoint.

When they approached the motorcyclist, it became apparent he would try to flee, police said.

"(The officer) got out and told the driver to turn his motorcycle off," said Chief Investigator Scott Farish. "At that time, the driver pushed the motorcycle backward and accelerated toward the officer, striking him in his leg and injuring his leg and shoulder."

He later caught up with the motorcyclist at Goldkist Road where another officer was assaulted before they took Burge into custody.
