JEFFERSONVILLE, IN (WAVE) - A museum is on the move as it leaves New Albany and settles into its new location in Jeffersonville. When doors open this fall, the former Bales Auto Mall lot will be the new home of the Vintage Fire Museum and Safety Education Center.

Renovations are underway in the 6,000 square-foot building located at 723 Spring Street. The museum will house a rare collection of steamers, carriages and trucks, some dating back to the 1700s.

"We had to have a suitable location in terms of traffic, visibility and reasonable amount of space," said Curtis Peters said, the museum director.

Coyle Auto Dealers is selling the museum's New Albany location at Spring Street and 4th Street. Curtis is preparing for the museum's reopening in Jeffersonville for sometime this November. He said the price for square footage in the new space was too good to pass up.

"The Redevelopment Commission was great to work with, the city was accommodating and we couldn't be happier," Peters said. There's also a 6,000 square-foot facility that'll provide storage for additional vehicles that won't be on display.

The museum will lease the property from the City of Jeffersonville - a destination in 2014 for the National Fire Museum Network Seminar convention previously held in two of the largest cities in the U.S.

"The Louisville area, Jeffersonville, follows on the heels of New York City and Los Angeles," Peters said.

The museum has a five year lease with Jeffersonville with plans to stay much longer.

The museum will house a rare collection of steamers, carriages and trucks, some dating back to the 1700s. Most of the vehicles and items were part of Fred Conway's collection, a longtime New Albany businessman.
