Fire officials said that a business that caught fire Thursday afternoon is a total loss.

Firefighters were on the scene at Alabama Climate Control on Wholesale Avenue since around 4 p.m. Thursday.

Crews were temporarily evacuated after the discovery of propane and Freon inside the building, however they were allowed to come back soon after it was deemed the tanks were not hot enough to cause explosion.

By 5 p.m., two crews were spraying water on either side of the building and additional crews were arriving to relieve the first crews on the scene. Thick black smoke continued to escape from the building as firefighters continue trying to knock down flames.

Following several hours of battling stubborn flames and acrid smoke, a hazmat crew determined late Thursday night that the area's air and water quality were no longer in danger.

All employees who worked at the building were accounted for. The owners of the business were too distraught to speak on camera, but said they were in shock.

Firefighters remained on the scene late Thursday night putting out hot spots. A cause has not been determined.
