BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Historic Kelly Ingram Park may be getting a name change if a Birmingham lawmaker gets his way.

Thursday state Representative John Rogers announced he wants to chance the four-acre park to Kelly Ingram Freedom Park. Rogers believes adding 'freedom' would play up the civil rights significance of the park over the last fifty years.

The park is named after Osmond Kelly Ingram, a Birmingham firefighter who was the first sailor killed in World War One.

"Some people wanted to take Kelly Ingram's name off of it completely. I said no. It's a destination point for a lot of folks in the movement. So keep Kelly Ingram Freedom Park. Everybody is happy," Rogers said.

Rogers said he has not heard of any opposition to the idea. Rogers plans to introduce the bill calling for the name change in the next session of the Alabama legislature.
