WETUMPKA, AL (WSFA) -

The Wetumpka City Council has voted not to allow any more business licenses for pawn shops, title loan businesses and sex shops.

City leaders approved the moratorium on business licenses for those types of establishments in an effort to keep better tabs on what's coming in to their community.

"With the casino [Creek Casino Wetumpka] and the operation that's coming that will be opening real soon, that if we get overrun by pawnshops and titles and those types of businesses, they aren't tax producers, really, for us," Mayor Willis says.

The mayor adds that there is only so much retail space that's available.

Mayor Jerry Willis says right now, Wetumpka has around 5 pawn or title loan businesses, which are often criticized for the exorbitant, some say "unfair" interest rates they charge.

The moratorium is temporary and will remain in effect for 6 months.
