HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A criminal investigation is underway into a multi-vehicle crash in May that killed a 10-year-old girl, according to court documents filed Thursday.

Police say Gunner Scarano, 18, caused the wreck that killed Jayden Coppens and injured eight others.

Scarano's attorney filed a motion to stall a civil lawsuit filed following the crash. The motion requested the case be put off until the criminal investigation is complete.

There were actually two crashes. The first was at Bailey Cove and Mountain Gap roads and involved four vehicles.

Scarano kept driving after that crash and, according to police, caused a chain reaction wreck a mile and a half away by hitting a Toyota van driven by Andrea Coppens at the intersection of Bailey Cove and Weatherly roads. Three children were in the van, including Jayden, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The force of the collision caused the van to slam into a Kia Soul, which hit a Lincoln Town Car, then swiped a Honda minivan and a Toyota truck. In all, six vehicles were involved in the second wreck.
