The Terrell Academy community gathered two weeks ago in a pep rally before its homecoming game. Funds raised throughout that week and the game were in honor of cheerleader Carrie Turner, who was diagnosed with cancer 2 years ago.
"We just wanted to do something to show our support," said Terrell Academy's Selena Grimsley. "We are a school, so we are all about the children."
Part of the effort was pushed by Turner, who wants to raise awareness of cancer.
"I've been trying to raise awareness because nobody knows that kids can have cancer too," Turner said. "Whenever I tell them, they say that's not possible you're only 17 years old."
In honor, assistant football coach Ashley Walker shaved his head.
"I couldn't say no, when they approached me about," Walker said. "It's a good cause I'm glad we got the money and I hope we raise more."
Carrie currently has 6 months of treatment left. Following that, she will routinely have scans to make sure the Leukemia doesn't return
"I've been fighting this for two years," Turner said. "Being at the end, I want to help everyone else whose future is going to go what I'm going through."
