TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Monday marks 12 years since 13 miners died at the Jim Walter Reed Mine in Brookwood.

A memorial service is being held this evening at the Miners Memorial Monument at West Brookwood Church on Lock 17 Road.

The Alabama Miners Memorial Foundation and the United Mine Workers of America hosts the service each year.

The evening of the accident, explosions were heard around Brookwood. Fellow miners went in to help a trapped co-worker, only to perish themselves.

Danny Hallman was a miner for over 30 years and says that the miners become family.

"There's not a soul that works here that wouldn't do the same thing," he said. "They know the dangers but they are going to try and take care of each other."

This anniversary was even more difficult for Gwendolyn Brown. Her son, Christopher, died in a mining accident in June.

With heavy hearts, loved ones laid evergreen stems at the miners' memorial wall.
