DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) -

A strange twist in an attempted Dothan bank robbery Wednesday led to the suspect leaving frustrated and empty-handed.

The incident happened at the Mid South Bank on the Montgomery Highway where the suspect walked in, told a teller he had a gun and was there to rob the bank.

The teller misunderstood the man's demand and mistakenly believed he was trying to open an account. To open an account, you have to have a valid ID. So the teller asked for it.

When the robber refused to give ID, an argument started and at some point he flashed the handle of his gun before fleeing the building, running to some nearby woods.

The Dothan Police Department was called to the scene and within an hour had the suspect they were looking for in custody.

Officers started a search of the area and found Antonio Ousley, 25, of Dothan, in the wooded area close to the bank. Also found were items of clothing in Ousley's belongings that matched those worn by the suspect.

Lt. Will Benny says Ousley did not actually have a gun, but he claimed to have not and presented something that resembled one, so he will be charged with robbery.

A bond amount has not yet been set.
