Police in Beaufort are searching for a man who robbed a beloved mom-and-pop shop on Greene Street.

The owner of Pruitt's Grocery was not hurt.

Many people have stopped by Pruitt's grocery to check on James Pruitt since Wednesday night's robbery. Despite the fact that he says this is the fourth time he's been robbed, it didn't stop him from opening early for business Thursday.

James Pruitt, 81, was back at it, slicing meat and cheese for customers inside his family owned and operated business.

"Yeah, I'm feeling alright," he said.

But less than 24 hours ago, Pruitt's life was in danger. Police said a man came in and robbed him.

"He kept saying he wanted 'money, money, money,' he had a pistol and stuff, so he got a little bit of money," said Pruitt.

Police said the suspect fired the gun before leaving the store.

But this isn't the first time it's happened.

"When I was out on Ribaut Road, they shot at me out there and then I got hit in the head in the '90s in here and then about two or three years ago I got robbed in here," he said.

Miraculously, none of those shots ever hit Pruitt. Folks around here are calling and stopping by to check on him.

"He means a great deal to the community, he provides a service which is really very valuable," said his friend, Nathan Harris.

"If you don't have money until tomorrow or next week, I've seen him give people credit that needed food and so he's been more than a help," added neighbor Krystal Singleton.

Pruitt also went in for a cardiologist appointment earlier Thursday. He said everything checked out just fine with his heart.
