Louisville neighborhoods take advantage of community Facebook groups

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - For most of us, checking Facebook and staying connected through social media is part of our daily routine. Neighborhoods are taking advantage of that sense of community and, in many cases, making a positive impact.

Two independent pages, created by people who live in the neighborhood, have gained nearly 17,000 members.

A Germantown-Schnitzelburg page has attracted close to 10,000 users and links people, places and events.

In another part of the metro, I am Dixie Highway has surpassed 7,000 members. Recently, southwest Louisville neighbors rallied around a PRP woman living in inhumane conditions.

"We were on the 'I am Dixie Highway' page and put out a plea on there for help. It snowballed from there," Susie Ford said.

Ford is one of the neighbors leading the effort to help the disabled woman, referred to as 'Mary,' with monetary and spiritual support. Mary continues to receive support and assistance through another page, Mary's Dixieville Angels.

"We knew it was a big job," said Ford. "We knew we needed help from the community and hundreds have come through since then."

Back in Germantown-Schnitzelburg, Danny McMahon created a neighborhood page to link the past and present.

"I just wanted to learn more about the history, but it grew and grew into a forum," McMahon said.

McHahon created the Germantown-Schnitzelburg page in January 2010. Since then, neighbors post everything from crime, lost pets, community events to covering expenses for the less fortunate.

"Right now, we're trying to raise money for a neighbor who died a couple years ago and doesn't have a grave marker," McMahon said.

Both community pages are independent and not affiliated with a government entity.

"Community to me, means, helping each other. Sometimes things get rough and you just need a little helping hand," McMahon said.

"Too often, you hear about the bad things," said Ford. "It's nice for people to get on the page and realize there are still good people in the community who are willing to help. It lifts everyone's spirit and you realize we can work toward a common goal. It's refreshing," Ford said.
