SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A sexual harassment allegation is being made against Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Chief Willie Lovett, according to a memo sent from the Savannah City Manager Stephanie Cutter to Mayor Edna Jackson and the City Council.

"Allegations of sexual harassment have been made by an SCMPD police officer against Chief Willie Lovett. An investigation by an outside legal firm is in progress," according to the city memo.

Rumors have been flying Thursday afternoon that Lovett is planning to retire. Lovett told WTOC: "I doubt it very seriously."

Contrary to reported rumors about the resignation and retirement of Lovett and a news conference to announce it – WTOC confirmed through city spokesman Bret Bell that not only was Lovett not retiring, but there would not be a news conference.

However, WTOC did learn that metro police command staff were called to City Hall by Cutter. Cutter requested one-on-one interviews as part of her investigation into sexual harassment claims against Lovett, according to Bell.

Bell told WTOC he was not aware of a news conference on Friday, and to his knowledge, there is not one planned. He also said there is a lot of misinformation being spread by other news organizations.

Bell said: "We have received a complaint. We are investigating that complaint. And will not release any more documents associated with that complaint or discuss that complaint until the conclusion of the investigation."

Bell said Lovett has not been placed on leave during this investigation.
