ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An Albany man says he's concerned after he got a call claiming his computer was infected. Luckily his knowledge of computers saved him.

If it's one thing Brandon Wingate knows, its computers. That's why the self proclaimed computer geek was surprised when someone called him saying his computer was infected with a virus.

"So I said okay, what the problem? He said my computer is infected. Long story short, he needed me to give them $300 hundred dollars and they would fix my computer. They needed my credit card, my name. As a computer nerd I knew something wasn't right about this, so I proceeded to ask how he got my phone number. Then he knew the jig was up," said Brandon Wingate.

Wingate says that's when the caller got upset and started yelling profanity over the phone. He says the caller told him it was an emergency and insisted he fix his computer right away.

Wingate says the man claimed to represent some type of computer company, but he had never heard of it.

"We're MRH software and that was totally bogus and made up but he said that another company had contacted them saying there was a problem, a security issues with my PC. So I said there's no way to get my information without a subpoena based on my I-P address," said Brandon Wingate.

Now he wants to warn others not to fall into the trap.

"If someone calls you about an issue on your computer and you haven't called anyone, geek squad or anyone local, disregard it, it's a scam," said Brandon Wingate.

Wingate says its easy way for scam artists to fool people if they're not tech savvy.
