HENDERSON, NV (FOX5) -

The Henderson teen accused of stabbing his mother and younger brother to death made his first appearance in court Monday.

Adrian Navarro-Canales, 16, was arrested Sept. 25 after Henderson police detectives named him as the suspect in the slayings of Elvira Canales-Gomez, 40, and Cesar Navarro, 9.

On Monday, a shackled Navarro-Canales was appointed a public defender. A judge scheduled his arraignment for Oct. 30.

Police said the teen was taken into custody on the Las Vegas Strip after workers at a food court saw him there for a couple of days.

The week before his arrest, police performed several welfare checks at the apartment where Navarro-Canales lived with his mother and brother after the mother and brother had not been seen at work or school for several days, according to police documents.

Police entered the apartment on Sept. 20, where the bodies of the Canales-Gomez and Cesar were found. Henderson police initially feared the teen was a missing person, but later named him as a suspect in the slayings.

In an arrest warrant, police said the deaths of Canales-Gomez and her son happened the day after the Navarro-Canales' birthday.

Navarro-Canales was charged with two counts of murder. He was being held at the Clark County Detention Center.
