ROSEBURG, OR (KPTV) -
A California couple following a route selected by their GPS unit ended up stuck for two days on a muddy Oregon road.
Charles Garton and his wife, of Ridgecrest, CA, were heading from California to Coos Bay on Saturday in their 23-foot motor home while pulling a utility trailer and a golf cart.
The route on his GPS unit took him off Interstate 5 at the Glendale exit and then down several BLM roads toward Highway 42.
Along the unimproved roads, Garton damaged his motor home and eventually became stuck in the mud on a remote road near Camas Valley.
Garton and his wife eventually called the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and asked for help around 8:30 p.m. that night.
Deputies responded and found Garton around 11 a.m. the next day. They cleared trees from the road, but because of the conditions of the roadway, they were unable to free the motor home.
A crew from Roseburg Towing also responded, but was unable to remove the motor home.
Deputies said the Gartons were offered a ride to town, but they refused to leave their motor home.
A search and rescue team continued to try and help the couple get the motor home back on the road Monday afternoon. The sheriff's office finally confirmed Monday night that the rescue volunteers were successful in helping the Gartons get back on their way.
