TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -

Denny Hamlin and Darrell Wallace, Jr. launched the NASCAR College Programs at University of Alabama and Auburn University today.

Hamlin took over Tuscaloosa. The number 11 FedEx driver is in town promoting the program put on by the Talladega Superspeedway to get younger people involved with the sport.

Hamlin spent his morning taking pictures with hundreds of students at the Locker Room on the Strip.

"Obviously they have some big Saturdays here at Alabama but for Sunday we hope to give them some entertainment at the speedway," he said.

Hamlin also gave a couple of students a ride to class in a FedEx golf cart.

"As much as fun as that was I couldn't even imagine getting in the race car with him, it would be a lot of fun," fan Austin Dickenson said.

And yes, Hamlin did try keeping it under the speed limit.

"Out on the street is really not my forte...it's definitely around a circle track," Hamlin said.

Some students also won party passes to the infield at Talladega for the upcoming Camping World RV Sales 500. Hamlin says Talladega is one of those courses where you never know what to expect.

"It's a wide open, drafting type. You see some of the biggest wrecks that we have in NASCAR come on a track like Talladega. It's one of the most exciting and obviously really plays a big deciding factor of who our champion is going to be," Hamlin said.

The Voice of the Tide, Eli Gold, who also announced for NASCAR, gave Hamlin a tour of Bryant Denny Stadium.

Hamlin says Alabama has plenty of championships and he says that gives him a little extra motivation to hopefully one day do the same in his sport.
