Ozark, AL (WSFA) -

Two students at Ozark's Carroll High School were arrested Wednesday and charged with having a gun on campus, according to Police Chief Tony Spivey.

Spivey says a student on campus saw another student whom he felt had a weapon. A student resource officer was notified and a search of the suspected student's bag was conducted.

Police found a handgun during the search. Further questioning revealed that one of the students brought the gun to school and put it in the second student's bag. Both knew it was in the bag, investigators say, adding that one of the two said he'd been threatened and wanted protection.

Chief Spivey says the 14 and 15 year olds were both charged with certain persons forbidden to possess a pistol. Both were transported to a juvenile diversion center.

Chief Spivey says there was never any immediate threat to anyone in the school. Spivey does not anticipate anyone else being charged.
