PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A bicyclist is dead after crashing through the windshield of the car that hit him, Phoenix police and fire officials said.

Officers said 31st to 35th avenues on McDowell Road are closed while police investigate the accident. As of 6 p.m., it's expected the roadway won't reopen for several hours.

The name of the victim has not yet been released.

The man, who was in his 50s, was walking his bike along McDowell Road, police said. Witnesses told police once he got near McDowell at 33rd Avenue, he decided to hop on his bike. When he did, he lost his balance and fell onto the roadway.

The car hit the man, hurtling him through the windshield. Police said the man's hand and foot were severed.
