FLORENCE, Ala. (AP) - The Army ROTC program at the University of North Alabama will be closing down as the Army looks to focus its efforts on faster-growing areas.

It's one of 13 programs that will be eliminated across the country in 2015 that has been graduating fewer than 15 commissioned officers a year.

The TimesDaily (http://bit.ly/18VbQjy ) reports about 70 cadets are part of the Army ROTC program at the University of North Alabama. Lt Col. Mike Snyder, leader of the battalion, tells the newspaper he was surprised by the news.

Although the program has commissioned an average of 10 officers in the last three years, Snyder says the quality of the cadets has been high.

The university has had a ROTC program since 1948.
