BIRMINGHAM, AL -

From: USPS;

The 8,577 postal employees working in the Alabama District's 593 Post Offices, stations, branches, and four processing plants are delivering a "Message from the Heart."

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and employees are reminding each other and the community that the purchase of Breast Cancer Research semi-postal stamps raises funds to research the cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure for this disease.

To date, the Breast Cancer Research semi-postal stamp (covering First-Class postage of 46 cents plus 9 cents to fund research) has raised nearly $77.8 million for breast cancer research.  It's $11.00 for a sheet of Breast Cancer Research semi-postal stamps vs. $9.20 per sheet for other Forever stamps.  By law, 70 percent of the net amount raised for semi-postal stamps is given to the National Institutes of Health and 30 percent is given to the Medical Research Program at the Department of Defense.

Employees also are inviting the community to pick up informational brochures on breast cancer prevention in Post Office lobbies as listed:
