MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Alabama Department of Corrections confirms 36-year-old Brent Springford Jr., the man serving a life sentence for beating his Montgomery parents to death in 2004, has died.

Springford was found unresponsive in his cell Monday at 12:18 a.m.

Springford was taken to Donaldson infirmary and later by ambulance to Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham where he died. Officials believe that he died from natural causes but an autopsy is pending. No foul play is suspected.

Springford was sentenced to life without parole on Dec. 12, 2008.

It took 4 years and even a change of venue before he was finally tried and sentenced.

Montgomery County District Attorney Ellen Brooks says he can still vividly recall the details of the crime that occurred in the home on South Hull Street.

"He hid out when he came to the home. He came at a time he knew they wouldn't be there but would be returning for Thanksgiving. The alarm, he set off an alarm in the garage, the police came, he hid from the police, so clearly he knew what he was doing and he knew he was up to no good," Brooks said. "He then broke into the house in a window that he knew was not alarmed and waited, armed himself and then chased his parents all over the upstairs of the house beating them and then ultimately using the knife to kill them both."

Springford, Jr. then fled Montgomery and headed back to Colorado where he lived at the time. All the while, police pegged him as a person of interest.

WSFA 12 News traveled to Colorado shortly after the incident, went to his house and left a phone number.

He called our reporter and the station several times. This is what he said during one of the calls:

"I've heard detectives Myrick and Davis suspect me for the murder of my parents. I have heard they are trying to build a case against me and I don't know what that is about. I love my mother and father and always have and I can't imagine anything involving them. I've also been diagnosed many years ago with bipolar, too."

"He would call WSFA and I believe try to make a mental defense," Brooks said.

Police pieced together Springford Jr.'s actions and testimony from family members who felt threatened by him even before the crime.

Brooks says the family is currently making burial arrangements for Brent Springford, Jr.

His only immediate surviving relative is his sister, Robin, who says she believes had she been in the house the night of her parents' death, she too, would have been killed.
