Flesh-eating bacteria case confirmed in Mobile Co.

MOBILE, AL (WSFA) -

Mobile County health officials have confirmed a case of flesh-eating bacteria.

They say a Mobile man who has an underlying health condition contracted it after going into the water with an open sore.

State health officials say there have been 11 cases of the bacteria reported this year in Alabama.

There are two ways someone can get infected.

"One is from an open sore on the body and typically the legs where you walk out on to the warm salty, brackish water, bay water in the gulf," said Dr. Richard Oyler with Compass Urgent Care. "The other way would be ingesting it or eating it like a raw oyster."

Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and blisters at the site of a cut.

Dr. Oyler says it's important to seek medical help if you experience any of those symptoms because the infection can be treated with antibiotics if caught in time.
