CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

A candlelight vigil was held on Sunday to honor the victims and celebrate survivors of domestic violence.

Hirsch Recreation hosted the free event on Sunday for She's Healed Inc., a budding non-profit organization founded by one woman's desire to meaningfully impact the lives of women and girls who have suffered from various forms of abuse.

The month of October is National Domestic Violence Awareness month. The purpose of the event was to bring community awareness to the issue.

"I founded She's Healed targeting women who have been physically and sexually abused," explains Victoria Hines, founder and president of the non-profit. "I, myself, am a survivor and I just wanted to prove a sense of sisterhood and encouragement to empower other women. I wanted to show them that their life doesn't end there. They can still go on and be successful."

Numerous women shared their stories of domestic violence at the vigil.

"When individuals see that other people have endured it, that they weren't afraid to leave various situations and that they were still successful, I think it helps bring attention to the matter and that people feel comfortable expressing what they are going through," explains Hines.

The event attracted dozens of supporters from around the Tri-state. The event concluded as victims of domestic violence released purple balloons, signifying their freedom from violence.
