Huntsville's Greenpower team places in National finals

Team USA getting prepared to compete in National finals Team USA getting prepared to compete in National finals

The students from Huntsville City Schools, who make up Team USA, have worked long hours the past several months to earn a spot in the Greenpower National Finals this weekend.

The group placed 10 out of 32 entries in the 90 minute race. In the four hour heat, Team USA had a bolt puncture in one of the tires, but still managed to finish 32 out of 74 teams.  Even though Sunday's rainy weather proved to be a challenge for all of the drivers, Huntsville's entry was honored with the Siemens "Innovation Award" for their car design. The Huntsville students were one of only three teams to gain a spot in the finals on their first attempt.

The Greenpower Initiative has sponsored the series of races since 1999.

The students build a single-seat electric car, which consist of a motor and three pairs of 12 volt batteries. The car can be built from a Greenpower supplied kit or students can design and construct the vehicle from scratch. Each team has to utilize a minimum of five drivers during the four hour race and can change out their batteries twice.

Team USA will return home this week, and take the knowledge gained from this weekend's race to begin work on next year's regional competition in June of 2014.
