LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A dog left alone in a vacant house for months survived, thanks to two children who worked to make sure he dog had food.

According to a search warrant, Mark Jaggers and his two children lived in the home with their 14-year-old pit bull until April 2013 when the children moved in with their grandmother who lived several blocks away.

In September police were called to the home on a report of a break-in. When officers arrived they discovered the children had broken into the home to feed the pit bull who was left behind.

The warrant states the children had gone to feed their dog daily. According to Louisville Metro Animal Services the dog was underweight, had severe hair loss and overgrown toenails.

The children's grandmother adopted the dog and he now lives with them in their home, said LMAS.

Jaggers is facing charges of abandonment and provision.
