Free healthcare exchange help available

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

If you're having trouble finding your way on the government's healthcare exchange web site, there is help available.

The River Region Health Center is offering free Affordable Care Act counseling for people who need help signing up.

A federal grant provided more than $200,000 to hire counselors to walk people through the process of getting healthcare coverage.

"What I would do is explain to her what the affordable care act is," says Sheba Seymore.

Practicing with a fellow counselor, Seymore walks through how she would help a potential client.

"So we would go up under Healthcare.gov. It states here, Welcome to the Marketplace. It asks you to create a marketplace account and here you're just gonna list all of your information, basic information, your name, your last name, the state you live and your email address."

Seymore is one of six certified application counselors hired after the River Region Health Center received a $218,000 dollar federal grant for the program.

"I'm very thankful for the opportunity to just help people," says Seymore.

But the role hits home for Seymore.  She too, recently applied for health insurance through the marketplace.

"I can understand when people don't have health insurance."

As the healthcare marketplace becomes more common place Seymore says, "we expect it to be very busy."

The office to get help is located at 4178 Lomac St., off Carmichael Road in Montgomery.

Counselors are available from 7:30am to 4:30pm to help people pick a package they can afford and answer any questions.
