AZ lawmakers discuss benefits for families of Prescott Hot Shots

State lawmakers are trying to figure out how to pay survivor benefits to the part-time Prescott Granite Mountain Hot Shots killed in the Yarnell Hill Fire.

The House Public Safety, Military and Regulatory Affairs Committee is meeting Tuesday at the state capitol.

The meeting comes a month after Speaker Andy Tobin urged members to quickly craft a plan to pay full survivor and other benefits to the 13 part-time firefighters. They were among 19 killed in the Yarnell Hill wildfire in June.

The committee also is trying to figure out how to legally cover some of the other costs of the fire, including a $5.2 million payment to the state's public safety retirement system owed by Prescott. The city was hit with the bill after the state system had to pay survivor's death benefits.

The town of Yarnell is also facing an uphill battle to recover from the wildfire. The Yarnell water system was damaged by the fire and now about 40 percent of water pumped is lost to leaks. The fire was so hot, the pipes melted underground.
